Message from our Co-Founder

Dear Friends,

I am often asked about my journey to co-founding Nurture Growth so I wanted to share with you a few stories to provide you with a glimpse about my passionate for agriculture.

Growing up in a farming community in Glencoe, Ontario, I was deeply influenced by the strong work ethic instilled in me by my parents and sponsors. Little did I know that my agricultural upbringing would come full circle in my life today! Some of my fondest memories include watching my parents farm cucumbers, where they watered the fields with buckets from a pond, riding the giant tractor with Grandpa Gibbs, and driving the mini tractor around the farm with the McDonald children.

Every summer until high school, I returned to the farm to spend time with my sponsors, learning firsthand about the challenges of farming. My sponsors worked tirelessly, starting their days around 6 A.M. and returning home only at dinner time, with Sundays reserved for church and still managing essential chores like feeding cattle and chickens. While there were profitable years, many were just enough to get by, and some were devastated by drought, frost, or disease. These experiences deepened my appreciation for the farming lifestyle.

So, when the opportunity arose to co-found a biofertilizer company, I saw it as a chance to help farmers grow more sustainably and increase their profits.

In the early years of Nurture Growth, I visited numerous farms in search of early adopters of our biofertilizer. Initially, our product faced skepticism and was often dismissed as “bugs in a jug”. Despite this, a few vineyards believed the science behind our biofertilizer. Today, thanks to their trust and advocacy, farmers across Ontario, Florida, and California have integrated Nurture Growth into their input programs and home gardeners across North America are using our biofertilizer in their home gardens and on their house plants.

We are near the end of summer, which means it’s time to check your garden regularly for ripened fruits! Our gardens have been hard at work these past couple of weeks, so it’s important to harvest our crops to promote the last bit of growth from our summer plants and make room for our fall crops.

Read the checklist below on other ways you can do to maintain your garden to thrive this August👇🏼

🧹 CLEAN UP: remove any dead leaves and debris to prevent diseases

👩🏽‍🌾 HARVEST: Lift onions and shallots once their tops die down and dry in the sun; Harvest tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers to encourage more fruits to form

💦 WATER: Water your garden regularly and add mulch if you haven’t already

🌱 FERTILIZE: Add nutrients to your houseplants once a week with our organic biofertilizer throughout the fall

We’ve recently achieved two notable accomplishments: joining the United Nations Global Compact Program and being selected as one of the ten companies invested in by SVG Ventures: THRIVE.

So, what does this mean for our growers? By joining the UN Global Compact Program, we reaffirm our commitment to sustainable agriculture and to supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. This partnership will help us measure and be accountable for our sustainability efforts. We look forward to sharing more on our progress and sustainability metrics in 2025 as we develop our KPI protocols.

The rain held off just in time for us to finish the golf tournament earlier last month at the annual Ginseng Association! It was great to connect with our growers for a friendly golf match out in Simcoe, Ontario.
